TREAD
HPCN simulation of tread extrusion in tire industry

Extrusion is a major manufacturing procedure for rubber and polymer processing industries. Extrusion is used to produce profiles such as window and door seals, and tire treads. It is evident that prediction by means of numerical simulation can dramatically improve the extrusion die design process, and reduce to minimum the number of trials in the line set-up.  In TREAD, the extrusion problems arising in tire industry are addressed, but other polymer transformers which produce extruded profiles for the automotive and construction industries could profit from the project results.

In the TREAD project, the consortium will demonstrate the applicability of Polyflow finite element code to tire tread extrusion simulation.  Simulations will be performed for one mono-material extrusion die, and for one complex bi-material die. The validation of the simulation results will be demonstrated by comparison with measurements which will be realised on those dies in a real industrial environment. Dissimination to relevant industries will be co-ordinated by the HPCN network of technology transfer nodes .

TREAD is a project conducted in the framework of HPCN PST activities of the European Commision Esprit program.
